ҹͤԡ

In 1927, the year Charles Lindbergh flew solo across the Atlantic and became an instant American hero, "a Siamese boy" was born in Cambridge Hospital (now Mount Auburn) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was to prove, over the next 72 years, his dedication and commitment to his country as a hard-working Thai and a great King.
The prince's early simple and relatively incognito life was cut short by his brother's succession as King Rama VIII of Siam at the age of nine after the abdication of their uncle, King Prajadhipok. Twelve years later, it was his turn to "serve the people." As the world struggled to rebuild itself after the ravages of WWII, King Bhumibol's 1951 New Year gift to Thailand--a song he had composed--offered a fresh image of royalty: young, creative and accessible--altogether modern.
Soon he did more than boost the morale of the country; he encouraged practical self-sufficiency and sustainability. Elsewhere people were fighting to free themselves from colonization and oppression, in Thailand the King traveled regularly and extensively north and south, east and west as well as a few times abroad to research on and advocate another idea of independence--the ability to stand on one's own two feet.
